How to Spot a Hot Wheels Treasure Hunt and Super Treasure Hunt

Spectraflame paint, Real Riders rubber tyres and a hidden TH logo: how to tell a Hot Wheels Super Treasure Hunt from a regular Treasure Hunt, and how to avoid fakes.

Hot Wheels 2026 mainline car on card

Somewhere in a case of ordinary mainline cars there can be one that looks almost the same but is not. Treasure Hunts are Hot Wheels' hidden chase cars, and the Super Treasure Hunt is the one collectors chase hardest. Here is how to check a car in under a minute.

Treasure Hunt or Super Treasure Hunt?

Hot Wheels began the Treasure Hunt series in 1995 and added Super Treasure Hunts in 2007. Both are packed into regular mainline cases, but they are not the same thing.

  • Treasure Hunt (TH): a lower-production mainline car marked with a circle-flame logo. It has standard paint and plastic wheels.
  • Super Treasure Hunt (STH): the rare one. It has Spectraflame paint, Real Riders rubber tyres and a small "TH" printed on the body, and it uses the same card art as the regular version of that car.

The four-point STH check

  1. Paint. Spectraflame is a deep, glossy metallic finish that seems to glow under light. Hold the car next to a regular mainline and the difference is obvious.
  2. Wheels. Real Riders are rubber tyres on a separate rim. If the wheels are one-piece plastic, it is not a Super.
  3. The TH logo. Look for a small "TH" printed somewhere on the body, often near the rear or along the side. A phone torch helps.
  4. The card. Collectors look for a gold flame logo behind the car on the card; regular Treasure Hunts use a silver or grey flame. Treat this as a hint and confirm with the paint and wheels.

Fakes and swaps to watch for

Because Super Treasure Hunts sell above shelf price, some get faked. Common tricks:

  • Rubber wheels swapped onto an ordinary mainline
  • Repainted bodies trying to copy Spectraflame (look for uneven or textured paint)
  • Blurry or off-colour TH logos
  • Resealed blisters, where the plastic bubble has been opened and glued back

If the blister looks re-glued or the card is creased around the bubble, pass.

Where to look

Treasure Hunts ship in normal mainline cases, so they can turn up wherever mainlines are sold. Check the wheels first, since rubber tyres stand out fastest, and look early when new stock arrives.

Quick answers

Do all Super Treasure Hunts have rubber tyres?
Yes. Real Riders are part of what makes a Super.

Is a regular Treasure Hunt valuable?
Less so. Super Treasure Hunts are the ones that usually fetch collector prices.

Does the card say "Super Treasure Hunt"?
Not in words. A Super shares its card art with the regular version, so the car itself is the proof.
